A Wedding Party Alternative: Making Space for Your Closest Friends
Your wedding day doesn’t have to follow a traditional timeline just because it’s what you’ve seen before.
For some couples, having a large wedding party with matching dresses, coordinated suits, and a formal lineup of bridesmaids and groomsmen simply doesn’t feel like them. And that’s okay. There are so many ways to create space for the people you love without putting everyone into a traditional wedding-party role.
One of my favorite alternatives? A dedicated time with your closest friends right before the ceremony.
Skip the wedding party. Keep the people.
Instead of spending the morning coordinating a traditional bridal party, consider setting aside a portion of your cocktail hour just for your closest friends.
Imagine stepping into a beautiful, relaxed space before your ceremony with the people who have known you the longest. No formal introductions. No perfectly posed lineup. No pressure to perform.
Just your people, a drink in hand, good food, and time to actually be together.
You could invite your closest friends to join you for a private cocktail hour before the larger reception begins. Have a few drinks, share some stories, and let your friends give informal toasts. Maybe someone brings up a story that absolutely should not be repeated in front of your entire extended family. Maybe everyone laughs until they cry.
Those are the moments worth remembering.
An intimate alternative to traditional wedding party photos
From a photography perspective, this also creates something really special.
Rather than a long list of traditional wedding party portraits, we can photograph your friendships as they actually feel. Walking together. Laughing over drinks. A hand on your shoulder. Someone pulling you into a hug. The little interactions that happen naturally when you're surrounded by people who know you best.
The photographs can feel clean, candid, authentic, and genuine—while still being intentional and beautifully composed.
And if you're drawn to true-to-color wedding photography, this kind of setting is perfect for it. The focus stays on the people, the atmosphere, and the feeling of the day rather than overly stylized edits or forced moments.
Your wedding day can look like you
There is something really beautiful about giving yourself permission to rethink the traditions that don't quite fit.
Maybe you don't want bridesmaids or groomsmen. Maybe you don't want a first look. Maybe you don't want to spend an hour taking formal portraits.
Instead, you want more time with the people you love.
Your wedding day should make room for that.
So invite your friends. Open a bottle of champagne. Let them toast you. Take a few photographs together. Then put the camera down and enjoy them.
Because years from now, you may not remember exactly who stood on which side of you during your ceremony—but you'll remember the people who surrounded you, the stories you told, and the feeling of having everyone you love in one place.
And those are the photographs I want to make for you: clean, candid, authentic, genuine, and true to color—while still feeling completely and unmistakably like your day.
